Jacques Katz

It is the people who make Jackman ICS what it is: the faculty, staff, and peer group. During my time at JICS, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a number of faculty: in courses, as a research assistant, and as mentors guiding my own research. Indeed, even after I began working full-time, the collaboration continued. One faculty member came to do research on the implementation of a new math approach in my grade 1/2 classroom. The result was a huge success—with gains for my students, praise from parents, and a published article.

We are excited to offer two field of study options: Practice-Based Inquiry (PBI) and Research Intensive Training (RIT). Field of study details are provided under About the MACSE.

You don't need any research background for our program! We want students to think critically, learn how to read and critique a range of studies with both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and understand how research can inform practice and address problems in classrooms. If you are in RIT, you will also be expected to be able to produce a research product through working closely with your supervisor.

Beyond Graduation Employment
Good news: The vast majority of our 2015 graduates were successful in obtaining a teaching position as a supply, long-term supply or contract teacher. Other graduates earned positions in educational leadership or research.

Extensive Practicum Experience
*Approximately 600 hours of practical experience in kindergarten, primary and junior classrooms in Toronto public, Catholic and independent schools. Students can also do placements in French. Our Practicum Team offers extensive support to Teacher Candidates in their placements. More practicum information can be found on the About the MACSE and Associate Teachers pages and here.

Professional Development Support
Year-2 students participate in regular employment preparation sessions and in the OISE Professional Preparation Conference, an annual event designed to facilitate entry into the teaching profession.

Knowledgeable Professors
Globally renowned CSE faculty members teach most required courses in the MA program, and electives as well! Our students are on a first-name basis with them. Our warm and accessible profs make major contributions to research in child development and education, encouraging students to participate in their projects. Faculty profiles can be found here.

Collaboration with the Lab School
Our students learn from teacher-researchers from the Dr. Eric Jackman ICS Lab School (2016 winner of the Outstanding Laboratory School  Award). Lab school teachers are also committed learners with practice anchored in inquiry, developmental readiness and emerging research.

Research Opportunities
MA students may engage in research projects at the university and at the Lab School. Students can volunteer or participate as Research Assistants or Graduate Assistants, or through Work Study positions.

Special Education and Early Childhood Education
Students may focus on one of these domains as a focused area of study or take one elective course in each area. Our department typically offers a selection of elective courses related to each area. Students may choose to do a fourth placement in a special education environment or to have placements in Kindergarten.

Our Preparing to Apply page contains MACSE-specific application information that you will find helpful.
